GEC Progress Report
(October 2016 to June 2017)
The General Education Center submits its first Progress Report since its establishment in October 2016. The report contains the mandate and functions of the office, its past activities and accomplishments, and a glimpse to its future endeavors.

GEC Diliman publishes its initial undertaking, the API Project: General Education Inventory of Instructional Materials in UP Diliman to compile and organize these materials for the GE faculty and students to access.

GEC also served as the Secretariat for the General Education Committee Workshop held at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel last January 10 – 11, 2017, and spearheaded the CHED Faculty Training for the Teaching of the New GE Core Courses last January 4 – 20, 2017, with 82 faculty participants across the Philippines.

Finally, UP Diliman organized the General Education Conference 2017 to provide a venue for multi-sectoral deliberation of the proposed UPD GE Program. 242 faculty members, including 3 Professor Emereti, 10 student representatives, and 90 walk-in student participants were present in the event. This is in preparation for the decision-making at the University Council Special Meeting to be held immediately after. The GEC Team acted as Support Staff for the conference, including the compilation and crafting of the Conference Proceedings.
GE Conference 2017 ProceedingsThe UP Diliman General Education Committee conducts the General Education Conference at the National Institute of Physics Auditorium last March 20, 2017 to provide a venue for multi-sectoral deliberation of the proposed UPD GE Program, in preparation for the UPD University Council Special Meeting to be held immediately afterwards on the same day. 242 faculty members from different clusters, including 3 Professor Emereti, 10 student representatives, and 90 walk-in student participants attended the event.

Chancellor Michael L. Tan opened the conference with a call to “be introspective on how GE has affected our own lives…” Dr. Carlene Pilar-Arceo, GEC Director, continued the program with her presentation of the January 10, 2017 Joint Recommendation of the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the UPD Hybrid GE Program and the UPD GE Committee, and the February 13, 2017 Recommendation of the Executive Committee. The results of the online Student and Alumni feedback, on the other hand, were reported by Dr. Joseph Ryan Lansangan, ILC Director.

The panel discussion on the proposed GE Reform followed thereafter. An open forum moderated by Dr. Perry S. Ong, UC CAPP Chair and UPD GE Committee member, was held immediately after the discussion.

To cap off the event, Dean Ma. Amihan B. Ramolete of the College of Arts and Letters, synthesized the content of the conference. Finally, ex-officio GE Committee Chair and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Benito M. Pacheco, recalled the recommendations of the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the UPD Hybrid General Education Program. He concluded by encouraging the attendees to start considering the next step for the proposed GE program – implementation.
API Project : General Education Inventory of Instructional MaterialsIn 2016, as its initial undertaking, the GEC Diliman implemented an Academic Program Improvement (API) Project with the title, An Inventory and Compilation of GE Course Materials in UP Diliman, which aims to (i) do an inventory of instructional materials being used in currently offered GE courses, (ii) compile and organize them into a repository, and (iii) house this repository in the GEC to facilitate access of GE faculty and students.

The GEC is mandated to, among others, compile and disseminate GE instructional materials, support the interdisciplinary nature of GE courses by coordinating with and among various academic units that (can) teach GE courses, and help develop concepts, pedagogies, materials, and all resources pertaining to GE courses. As such, the GEC sees fit to have as its first project the inventory of instructional materials being used in the current GE courses, and creating a repository through which they may be accessed by GE faculty and students.

Moreover, the project outcome will assist UPD in developing new GE courses, especially at a time when other universities are preparing to teach new core GE courses as mandated by CHED (CMO No. 20). Knowing what is already on hand will direct the GE faculty to work on what is still needed for the new courses, if any, which will be offered beginning AY 2018-2019, and apprise them of how the UPD program benchmarks against the CHED GE program.
