CHED Faculty Training for the Teaching of the New General Education (GE) Core Courses

The GEC Diliman, under the guidance of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), successfully conducted its 1st CHED Faculty Training for the Teaching of New General Education (GE) Core Courses last 4 – 20 January 2017.

Eighty-two (82) faculty participants from various higher education institutions across the Philippines participated in sessions held at SOLAIR, ISSI, and SURP classrooms. The 17-day training kicked-off with an orientation by VCAA Benito M. Pacheco.

The training was part of the CHED initiative to help HEIs transition to the new CHED GE courses through the development of sample course syllabi with up-to-date reading materials and other resources, based on the provisions of CMO 20, series of 2013. The courses delivered in UP Diliman were Ethics/ Etika, Readings in Philippine History/ Mga Piling Babasahin sa Kasaysayan, and The Life and Works of Rizal/ Ang Buhay at Mga Akda ni Rizal.

It also aims to orient the participants on the philosophy of liberal education and to enable the participants to teach the interdisciplinary GE core courses using new materials as well as become viable resource persons for the next batch of trainees.

The participants were divided accordingly into sections which correspond to the new GE core subjects to be taught. Each course was supervised by a UPD faculty member: Asst. Prof. Bernard Caslib (Ethics), Asst. Prof. Arlyn Macapinlac (Etika), Prof. Neil Santillan, PhD (Readings in Philippine History), Asst. Prof. Raymund Abejo (Mga Piling Babasahin sa Kasaysayan), Asst. Prof. Rhodalyn Wani-Obias (The Life and Works of Rizal), and Asst. Prof. Kerby Alvarez (Ang Buhay at mga Akda ni Rizal).

Those who successfully passed the course were awarded Certificates of Completion. Certificates of Participation were given to all participants during the Culminating Night held on 19 January 2017 at the SOLAIR Auditorium.
