GEC Shares Best Practices and Insights in General Education During NU Laguna Benchmarking Visit

The General Education Center (GEC) welcomed National University Laguna (NU Laguna) for a benchmarking activity on October 15, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN, at the 2nd Floor DILC Conference Room, UP Diliman. The activity provided an avenue to share insights and best practices on the delivery and coordination of general education courses, drawing from the GEC’s ongoing initiatives.

GEC Director Charles Erize P. Ladia led the activity by welcoming the representatives from NU Laguna, headed by Mr. Ben Oliver D. Tutor, Department Chair for General Education, and presenting an overview of the functions of the GEC, including its brief history, vision, mission, mandates, and the UP GE Framework. Junior Office Associate Khiara Quenzelle D. Belleca presented LINANGAN: The GE Faculty Development Extension Program 2026–2027, while Senior Research Associate Stephany Louise A. Marquez provided an overview of the Construct Clarification of the UPD GE Objectives study, giving them a comprehensive look at the GEC’s ongoing research initiatives.

The discussion that followed centered on best practices in teaching and coordinating GE courses, with NU Laguna representatives raising questions on effective approaches to GE instruction and program management. Among the topics explored was how educators and institutions can address the common perception among students that GE courses are less important than courses in their major fields of study. Both institutions exchanged perspectives on making GE courses more meaningful and relevant to students’ academic experiences.

This benchmarking activity proved to be a productive exchange, with both institutions leaving with a shared understanding of making general education more meaningful and responsive to the needs of today’s students. Both institutions also hoped for future collaborations in doing research on GE courses and extension work with communities.
