Following the recent conclusion of FGDs for its research on GE objectives, the General Education Center (GEC) participated and presented the preliminary findings of its landmark GE Program Assessment research during a plenary talk at the 2nd UPLB General Education Planning Workshop entitled “Dalub-Turuan 2.0: Dalubhasaan sa Pagtuturo ng GE sa UPLB; Guro sa Kapwa Guro” last 5 May 2025 in the university’s REDREC Auditorium.
Along with the UPLB GE Council and faculty members teaching GEs, the workshop was attended by the GEC Director Dr. Anna Marie Sibayan-Sarmiento and Junior Office Associates Hassey Lyn Trinidad, Stephany Louise Marquez, and John Edward Magnifico upon the invitation of the UPLB GE Program Director Dr. April Hope Castro. Also present in the workshop was former UP Faculty Regent Prof. Ramon Guillermo who also gave a plenary talk on nationalism and the proposed UP Core Curriculum.
The workshop started with welcome remarks from the UPLB Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Agham Cuevas, followed by the introduction of the workshop theme made by Director Castro. Then, Director Sibayan-Sarmiento was introduced to give the first plenary talk regarding the review of general education modules, in line with the purpose of the workshop to “review the course goals and objectives of the eleven system-approved GE courses, and align evaluation techniques with course objectives.”
With this plenary talk, Director Sibayan-Sarmiento shared the GEC’s study entitled “Construct Clarification of the University of the Philippines – Diliman (UPD) General Education (GE) Objectives” and elaborated on its rationale and methodology. After this, she was joined by Junior Office Associate Marquez who discussed the preliminary findings, limitations and challenges, future directions, and recommendations for this research. The plenary talk then concluded into an open forum to answer questions and inquiries from the audience.
Overall, it is with this opportunity that the GEC reaffirms its commitment to champion the UP General Education Program and contribute to the “continuous improvement of the teaching of general education subjects.”
