GEC concludes FGDs for landmark GE Program Assessment research

The General Education Center (GEC) has recently concluded the data gathering phase for the preliminary phase of evaluating the University of the Philippines Diliman’s (UPD) current General Education (GE) program. The objective of this preliminary study is to address the repeated calls for the operationalization of the GE objectives through understanding how UPD stakeholders understand and define them.

As part of this initiative, a series of focus group discussions (FGD) from January to February 2025 were conducted with students and faculty members currently teaching a Diliman-21 GE course. These discussions provided critical insights into how the participants define and construe the themes and dimensions of the GE objectives as well as offered a platform for them to share their personal experiences and perspectives on the program.

Data analysis is currently underway. The findings of the FGDs will serve as the baseline qualitative data that will be used to conceptually define the constructs identified from the current UPD GE Program objectives. Subsequently, these findings will serve as foundation for the latter phases of a bigger project evaluating the UPD GE program.

The GEC would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the students and faculty members who actively participated and expressed their interest in contributing to the study. Additionally, the GEC also expresses their appreciation to the academic unit heads and cluster chairs for their invaluable support in providing the nominations for the participants for the FGDs.
